The 5th November each year seems to be extended into two/three weeks of upset and anxiety for our favourite pooches. Not only is it stressful as an owner it is also very difficult to get your dog used to something which is so sporadic. I am always giving clients the same advice, which is to make sure your dog has had a really long off lead walk during the days you think the fireworks may be set off in the evening. Exercise is the biggest cure for anxiety in canines and so a really good long off lead walk really does help. The second thing that you can do is simply just be there. Stay home on the nights you think may be problematic. I know we can find ourselves busy but prioritising your dog on these evenings can really help for them to avoid suffering. Having them on your lap or even just close to you if a larger dog will help them to relax. Do not panic and have a calm relaxed energy which will have a positive effect on your dog. The third tip is to have a rawhide chew available and down at all times during this season. You can get long lasting rawhide chews which really does help dogs during times of stress and the constant chewing is a positive way to release energy and also something for your dog to focus on rather than the bangs!!! I hope this helps and for any severe anxiety please get in contact for some more extensive training that may be needed. Look after your woofs! 🎆
